I think we have talked a little bit about this issue in class. However, the author of this article wrote it from the biolgy and ethics angles.
A mother of 33 years old gave birth to octuplet. Before that, she already had six children for a fertility treatment. The guidline for embryo implant is that the patient under the age of 35 would not have more than two embroys implanted. Even eight babies were born this time, it doesn't mean that the doctore implanted eight embroys at that time. They might implanted five at the beginning, and the embroys splited into eight. As the giving birth to extreme multiples would come with tremedous risks for both mother and babies, the doctor sugguested to selectively reduce the number of embroys but was rejected by the mother.
I have to say this is a miracle in medical science. All the babies are healthy and so it is with the mother. She's so brave that willing to give birth to multiple babies for a sencond time! However, this mother never thinks carefully about what is the real meaning of being a mother? Giving birth to a child is only part of it. What's more, a child need to be raised up with enough material guarantee and good education. On the other hand, people should take a serious attitude towards fertility treatment. If science method is being abused, the result could be horrible!
